Learn to rescan disk in Linux VM when its backed vdisk in VMware is extended. This method does not require downtime and no data loss.

Rescanning is when your TV finds all of the available channels in your area.
Sometimes we get a disk utilization situations and needs to increase disk space. In the VMware environment, this can be done on the fly at VMware level. VM assigned disk can be increased in size without any downtime. But, you need to take care of increasing space at OS level within VM. In such a scenario we often think, how to increase disk size in Linux when VMware disk size is increased? or how to increase mount point size when vdisk size is increased? or steps for expanding LVM partitions in VMware Linux guest? or how to rescan disk when vdisk expanded? We are going to see steps to achieve this without any downtime.
In our example here, we have one disk
/dev/sdd assigned to VM of 1GB. It is part of volume group vg01 and mount point
/mydrive is carved out of it. Now, we will increase the size of the disk to 2GB at VMware level and then will add up this space in the mount point
If you re using the whole disk in LVM without any fdisk partitioning, then skip step 1 and step 3.

/dev/sdd of 1GB size. We have created a single primary partition on it /dev/sdd1 which in turn forms vg01 as stated earlier. Always make sure you have data backup in place of the disk you are working on.
Now, change disk size at VMware level. We are increasing it by 1 more GB so the final size is 2GB now. At this stage disk need to be re-scanned in Linux so that kernel identifies this size change. Re-scan disk using below command :
Make sure you use the correct disk name in command (before rescan). You can match your SCSI number (X:X:X:X) with VMware disk using this method.
Note : Sending “– – -” to /sys/class/scsi_host/hostX/scan is scanning SCSI host adapters for new disks on every channel (first -), every target (second -), and every device i.e. disk/lun (third -) i.e. CTD format. This will only help to scan when new devices are attached to the system. It will not help us to re-scan already identified devices.
That’s why we have to send “1” to /sys/class/block/XYZ/device/rescan to respective SCSI block device to refresh device information like the size. So this will be helpful here since our device is already identified by the kernel but we want the kernel to re-read its new size and update itself accordingly.
Now, kernel re-scan disk and fetch its new size. You can see new size is being shown in your
fdisk -l output.
At this stage, our kernel know the new size of the disk but our partition (
/dev/sdd1) is still of old 1GB size. This left us no choice but to delete this partition and re-create it again with full size. Make a note here your data is safe and make sure your (old & new) partition is marked as Linux LVM using hex code
8e or else your will mess up the whole configuration.
Delete and re-create partition using
fdisk console as below:
fdisk prompt commands are highlighted in the above output. Now you can see the new partition
/dev/sdd1 is of 2GB size. But this partition table is not yet written to disk. Use w command at
fdisk prompt to write table.
You may see the warning and error like above. If yes, you can use
partprobe -s and you should be good. If you still below error with
partprobe then you need to reboot your system (which is sad ).
Now rest of the part should be tackled by LVM. You need to resize PV so that LVM identifies this new space. This can be done with
As new PV size is learned by LVM you should see free/extra space available in VG.

You can see our VG now have 2GB space! Now you can use this space to create new lvol in this VG or extend existing lvol using LVM commands. Further you can extend filesystem online which is sitting on logical volumes.
You can observe all lvol in this VG will be unaffected by this activity and data is still there as it was previously.
If you're using third-party plug-ins, try any of these recommendations to fix your issue depending on what you're experiencing:
- If you can open Logic Pro or MainStage, but you're having issues with your project or concert, try bypassing plug-ins.
- If you can't open Logic Pro or MainStage, try removing plug-ins.
- If a recently-installed plug-in isn't available in Logic Pro or MainStage, try the following in the order listed until you can find the plug-in:
Bypass Audio Units plug-ins
If you're having an issue in a particular Logic Pro project or MainStage concert that uses third-party plug-ins, bypass each third-party plug-in in the project one-by-one, testing the project after you bypass each plug-in.
You can bypass plug-ins several different ways:
- Place the pointer over the plug-in slot in a channel strip, then click the Bypass button so the slot dims.
- Option-click the plug-in slot so the slot dims.
- In the plug-in window, click the Bypass button so the slot dims.
If bypassing a plug-in fixes your issue, check with the manufacturer to see if the plug-in is compatible with your version of macOS, and for possible updates.
Remove Audio Units plug-ins
If you can’t open Logic Pro or MainStage, try manually removing plug-ins.
- Find the plug-in file on your Mac.
- If you suspect a particular plug-in, locate the file for the plug-in in the folder, then drag the file to the Desktop.
- Try to reopen the app.
If you still can't open Logic Pro or MainStage:
- Create a new folder on the Desktop.
- Move all the plug-in files that appear in their installation locations to the new folder.
- Try to open Logic Pro or MainStage.
- If you can open the app, replace each plug-in file to its original location one-by-one. Quit and reopen the app after you replace each plug-in file. If you can't open the app after replacing a particular plug-in file, that plug-in might be corrupted or incompatible. Try reinstalling the disabled plug-in or check with the manufacturer for an update.
Restart your Mac
If your Mac is running macOS High Sierra or later and you recently installed a plug-in that isn't available in Logic Pro or MainStage, restart your Mac. Before you restart your Mac, confirm that the plug-in is 64-bit compatible. 32-bit plug-ins aren't compatible with Logic Pro or MainStage.
- Choose Apple menu > Restart.
- Open Logic Pro or MainStage.
- Click an Audio Effect, Instrument, or MIDI Effect slot to see if the plug-in is available in the pop-up menu. If the plug-in still isn't available, rescan the plug-in.
Confirm that the plug-in is installed
If a recently-installed plug-in still isn't available after restarting your Mac, confirm that the plug-in is installed:
- Choose Logic Pro X > Preferences > Plug-in Manager, or MainStage 3 > Preferences > Plug-in Manager.
- In the Plug-in Manager, locate the plug-in. To filter the list by manufacturer, click the manufacturer's name in the left column.
- If the plug-in doesn't appear in the Plug-In Manager, find the plug-in file.
If 'not authorized' appears in the Compatibility column for the plug-in, make sure the plug-in is properly authorized as documented by the manufacturer.
- Reinstall the plug-in, then restart the computer.
- If the plug-in still isn't available, check with the manufacturer to see if the plug-in is compatible with your version of macOS, and for possible updates.
Rescan a plug-in
If the recently-installed plug-in is installed, use the Plug-in Manager to rescan the plug-in.
- Choose Logic Pro X > Preferences > Plug-In Manager, or MainStage 3 > Preferences > Plug-In Manager.
- In the plug-in Manager, locate the plug-in you want to check. To filter by manufacturer, click manufacturer's name in the left column.
- If 'failed validation' appears in the Compatibility column for the plug-in, select the plug-in in the list, then click Reset & Rescan Selection.
If 'not authorized' appears in the Compatibility column for the plug-in, make sure the plug-in is properly authorized as documented by the manufacturer. Then rescan the plug-in.
- If the plug-in fails validation again, check with the manufacturer to see if the plug-in is compatible with your version of macOS, and for possible updates.
Rescan all plug-ins
To automatically rescan all installed plug-ins, remove the Audio Unit cache file.
Rescan For Mac Os
- In the Finder, press Option and choose Go > Library.
- In the Finder window, go to Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache.
- Move the files from AudioUnitCache folder to the Desktop.
- Restart the computer, then open Logic Pro X or MainStage. All installed Audio Units plug-ins will be rescanned.
